Recent national and state elections have brought to the forefront the phenomenon of the “WoC vote saving everybody.” Their significant voter turnout and support of women’s issues compared to that of women of the majority or other demographics have been key indicators of this. Conversely, when Women of Color take the step to run for public office, support – financial and other – lags significantly, even from their own communities.
As part of Speak Truth’s new “We See You” series, where we will highlight WoC “hidden figures” and WoC “hidden struggles,” we would like to invite you to this year’s WakandaCon where we will engage in a panel discussion, through the lens of the female characters in Black Panther, to unpack the dynamics, limitations, and expectations of political participation and power of women of color. The discussion will be led by WoC subject matter experts and current candidates; drawing parallels between the film’s female leads and women of color who are at various levels of the political life cycle.
